Michel Melot is an alumnus of the Ecole Nationale des Chartes. He was in turn director of the Print and Photography department at the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, director of the Bibliothèque publique d'information at the Centre Georges Pompidou, and president of the Council of libraries in France. He became under-secretary of the 'Inventaire général' and of the 'documentation du patrimoine' in 1996. His writings on the history of art include 'L'estampe impressioniste' (Flammarion, Paris, 1994).
